Introduction

This is a relatively 'bare-bones' extract, from a fuller account of the family, currently 'work in progress', which follows the Fretwells as they moved away from Cawthorne, to Hoyland Swaine, Tadcaster, Selby and Leeds, and thence dispersed to various adjacent counties, and overseas.

Cawthorne Origins starts with an outline family tree of the generations covered. There is then a listing of the births, marriages and burials of those Fretwell rites of passage as recorded in the extant Cawthorne Parish Registers, and then the account follows the family through from the first to the third generations. The fourth and succeeding generations are covered in Cawthorne and Beyond.

From the second generation, a list of the people who married into the Fretwell family (where the name is known), and in some cases remarried, is provided.

While much of the information has been verified, a reading of the following reveals numerous gaps to be plugged, and a number of questions yet to be answered. Any information that might assist in completing the picture will be gratefully received. I am only an email away!
